Why You Should Get Chiropractic Treatment for Back Pain

By Debra Rodzinak

Whenever I am in pain, whether it is from a headache, sore muscles, or back pain, I always get unsolicited advice on what to do. Some is solid advice, like the person who told me to try yoga for my chronic tight piriformis muscles, to bad advice, like the person who told me to drink a half cup of vinegar first thing in the morning to help with my aching joints.

Research

I have learned that research and constant reading have been the most beneficial to finding cures that really work. For example, I came across a study in The Spine Journal that studied patients with acute back pain and sciatica with disc protrusion. This led me to realize that chiropractic treatment for back pain is beneficial.

Basically, the researchers treated 102 people who reported lower back pain with sciatic pain. Half of these people were treated with spinal manipulation and the others were not. Of the ones who received treatment, all but one patient reported that their pain was relieved with many patients reporting being pain-free. In percentages, this means that 98 percent of the patients who received treatment were either pain-free or had a significant reduction in pain after treatment. I’ll take those odds any day!

Number of Visits

More than likely, it will take several visits with a chiropractor to find complete relief. In the above mentioned study, the patients received treatments five days a week for up to 20 visits. In a second study reported, 72 patients were treated for lower back pain with the total number of visits differing.

Patients were treated a certain number of times per week:  1, 2, 3, or 4 days per week.  After a month of treatment, the patients who received 3 treatments per week reported the most pain relief. After 3 months, all patients reported some level of pain relief. Pencil me in for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, please.

The most interesting part of this study was that the “sweet spot” for complete pain relief with chiropractic treatment was 3 or 4 visits for 3 weeks.
