3 Gym Etiquette Tips to Remember

By Genevieve Cunningham

You’re a regular in the gym. You go every day, know how to use all of the equipment, and have a set routine for each day of the week. You’re all set! And then the new year rolls around … and your regular routine is completely thrown out of whack by all of the gym newbies. While you’re certainly proud of them for making a change in their lives, you can’t help but be annoyed by their gym habits.

Now let’s flip the script. You’re a newbie! You want to make a change in your life and you hit the gym like your life depends on it (and it might!). After a few sessions, you notice that a few people are throwing you some sideways glances. You feel awkward, get frustrated, and give up. Before you find yourself in this scenario, take heart in the fact that these sideways glances may be completely avoidable with some very simple changes to your routine. No one at the gym wants you to fail … they just want you to learn gym etiquette! Take a look at these quick and easy rules that will make your transition to the gym easier than ever.

Get Off the Machine

Equipment in the gym is meant to be shared. Many people find a piece of equipment that they like, and then they hoard it like there’s no tomorrow. They stay on the machine between sets, resting for minutes at a time. Don’t be this person! When your set is complete, get up and make the machine available to the next person. You might have to wait longer to begin your next set, but it’s polite, fair game, and the proper way to share and use equipment in any gym.

Wipe Your Equipment Down

If you’re using equipment owned by the gym (or even if it’s yours), it’s really good etiquette and hygiene practice to wipe it down when you’re finished. Gyms offer small towels in most rooms. These are for wiping sweat from both your body as well as the equipment that you use. No one wants to sit down in your sweat! If you’re skipping this step, you can definitely expect some dirty looks, but correcting the problem is as simple as a quick clean up job when you’re done.

It’s Not a Gossip Central

Of course you’re not one of these people, but there are those who use the gym as a means to hang out with friends. They might work out, but they’re not really serious about it. While it’s perfectly OK to talk with friends and joke around throughout your session, it’s not OK to take up all of the space just to sit around and laugh and gossip with friends. Keep your workouts light and fun, but don’t make this mistake. Make the gym a workout place, and keep the gossip anywhere else.

Don’t let poor etiquette make you hate the gym. No one cares what you’re wearing, how you look when you strain your body, or how overweight you are. Seriously! If you’re feeling judged in the gym, it might be in your habits. Luckily, this is an easy fix. Use these tips to make your gym transition a success, and to hit your fitness goals now and in the future.
