3 Reasons to Rethink Your Coffee Habit

By Genevieve Cunningham

Who doesn’t love a warm cup of joe in the morning? It feels good in your hands, hits the tastebuds just right, and gets your energy levels rising. While coffee certainly brings some benefits to life, it also has a few negative side effects that may show up unannounced. If you’re a coffee fanatic, take a look at these reasons you may want to quit or at least cut back for your own health.

Coffee is Addictive

It may not be as addictive as hard drugs, but the truth is that caffeine is often considered a kind of drug. A legal one and an accepted one … but a drug nonetheless. Caffeine has been known to be addictive for many years. The more you drink, the more you need. While this may not bother many people, others find the idea of being addicted to anything mildly appalling. And of course, anything that is addictive has the potential for withdrawal should you not get your fix. For caffeine users, this often means headaches, lethargy, and an inability to concentrate.

Coffee Causes Stains and Bad Breath

On a slightly more superficial note, coffee is a substance that causes stains on the teeth and bad breath. You can often tell when someone is a serious coffee drinker simply by looking at their teeth. The coffee stains them slightly yellow, and the general brightness of healthy teeth is gone. Excessive amounts of coffee can also leave you with what is called “coffee breath.” Unfortunately, this doesn’t smell simply like coffee, but rather takes on a sick, bacterial kind of smell that most find rather gross.

Coffee Can Irritate the Bowels

This doesn’t affect everyone, but many people find that coffee causes their bowels to work very quickly … too quickly. Some coffee drinkers may develop sensitivity in the intestines. They develop a form of irritable bowel syndrome that is a direct result of the acidity and diuretic nature of coffee. It can cause pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and even blood and mucus. And if coffee is the culprit, simply avoiding the drink often stops this kind of irritability in its tracks.

Coffee, for many people, is a great way to start the day. If you want to keep drinking it, you can do so almost guilt-free. But it might not be a bad idea to lower your intake in order to protect your health long-term. While the side effects are different for everyone, this warm pick-me-up definitely has its own set of downsides. Be smart, drink in moderation, and you can have your favorite java while also minimizing any potential negative side effects.
