That Heat and Humidity Can Get You

By Tom Herrin

In the old days, it didn’t seem that as many people experienced heat-related problems.  It is not so much that the temperatures were cooler as it was that many people were a little wiser.  There was good reason for that.  With no air conditioned homes, people were more accustomed to the heat and how to deal with it.  Today is a little different.  People in most places spend a lot of time in climate controlled environments.  This generally makes it more difficult to become accustomed to those higher temperatures.  A good plan can allow them to get out and be active in those higher temperatures while still being safe.

Include Water First

The body is unable to function properly if it has an inadequate amount of water.  Dehydration can occur quickly and with little or no warning.  Drinking water from the beginning of the day and at regular intervals throughout the day can help to maintain a balance of water.  Too many people make the mistake of drinking alcohol in the heat.  This can seriously increase dehydration.  Caffeinated drinks can also add to this problem.  Sports drinks can be a good supplement as long as water makes up the majority of the fluid taken in.

Find The Right Time For Direct Sun

In the South, the early mornings are usually the best time to participate in outdoor activities if in the direct sun.  Late afternoons are likely to be too hot and humid to do much.  Doing something in the shade is not a bad way to build up some degree of tolerance.  Kennesaw has the rare advantage of having wifi available in some of the parks.  This can allow people to take their wireless devices to the park to work while still having the opportunity to develop some heat tolerance.  This could be a great transition to more outdoor activities.

Proper Dress Is Make Or Break

People should always avoid tight, heavy, or dark clothes in the heat.  Lightweight, light colored, and loose-fitting clothes are much more beneficial.  This can allow better airflow, which can help in cooling the body.  A hat with a brim all the way around can help protect the face and neck.  Sunshades and sunscreen are always useful additions.  Enjoying the warm weather can be attainable and good for the whole family.  The key is to plan ahead and be prepared.  It can pay off in better health and a safer activity.
