Everyday Tips for Building Confidence and Self-Esteem

By Kate Gardner

Having low self-esteem can be brutal. If you have low self-esteem, you probably don't think much of yourself or your abilities. You may lack the confidence to stand up for yourself or try new things. According to Psychology Today, low self-esteem can make you more vulnerable to other problems like depression which can, in turn, lessen your self-esteem even more.

Building your self-esteem and confidence may seem like a daunting task and it certainly can be when you're mired in self-doubt or depression. However, there are lots of things you can start doing right now to build your confidence and value yourself more. You don't have to do them all. Pick something doable to start with and see if it makes a difference!

Take Care of the Outside

When you're trying to be a more confident person, it can help to look the part. This can mean taking a shower, picking something nice to wear, or making sure your nails are trimmed. It may also mean working on your environment. Doing the dishes or putting the laundry away can make your space look nicer and make you feel more confident. Taking care of the outside isn't just about playing a part. Setting and achieving these goals can help you see yourself as someone who gets things done!

Take Care of the Inside

Foster more confidence by taking care of your body and mind. Do your best to eat nutritious meals and get some exercise. It's important to aim for nutrition and fitness goals that feel like something you can achieve. You don't have to eat the perfect Mediterranean diet or run 20 miles per week. Success at meeting small goals will do more for you than failure at meeting huge goals.

Take 3 Minutes Per Day

Psychology Today outlines a daily practice that can help you build more confidence and self-esteem. Take three minutes each evening to make a list of all your successes from that day. Make sure to count small successes and not just the large ones. Small successes can come from lots of different places. Maybe you asked a stranger for the time, or maybe you managed to get all your laundry washed. Remember, this is a time to look for successes. If you find your brain gravitating towards examples of ways you failed, gently redirect your thoughts. Maybe making the list is itself a success!

Building confidence and self-esteem aren't going to happen overnight, but using these tips may help you see yourself in a more positive light!
