Liven Your Liver With These 5 Tips
By Brandi Goodman
Your liver is responsible for keeping your blood clean, producing bile that is necessary for digestion, storing glycogen for energy, and more. Liver disease and cancer can reduce this organ's function so these tasks do not get accomplished correctly. During Liver Cancer Awareness Month in October it's important to learn some tips to liven your liver so it can be healthy and continue to do its many jobs.
Get Aerobic Exercise
The liver works better when you get regular exercise. Exercise helps with fatty acid oxidation. This process produces energy for certain systems within the body. Aerobic forms, such as cycling, running, swimming, and walking, are the most beneficial. Get this type of exercise more often so your liver works as well as it can.
Eat More Fiber
Fiber is necessary for digestion as well as liver function. Make sure you're adding more fiber to your diet if you want to keep your liver healthy. Choose whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. It's also wise to avoid foods high in fat that are more difficult for the liver to process. Sugar and salt should be avoided as well. A nutritious diet is what your body needs.
Drink Plenty of Water
Dehydration can lead to poor liver function. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and your liver functioning well. It's ideal to drink around half your body weight in ounces of water per day. You may even experience some weight loss if you drink this much water daily and avoid other sugary beverages.
Get More Sleep
Poor sleep and stress can lead to illness and even obesity. To maintain your weight and prevent yourself from getting sick, make sure you're getting more sleep. This will help to keep your liver and the rest of your body healthy and strong. Find a sleep routine that helps you get enough rest each night.
Stop Smoking and Drinking
Smoking and drinking are two common habits that do great harm to the liver. If you hope to liven your liver and make it function correctly, then stopping these activities will help. Your body can begin working on recovering from the damage done the sooner you stop.
Consider these tips throughout Liver Cancer Awareness Month and every month after. You need a lively liver that is functioning well and handling all of its responsibilities. A weak liver plagued with cancer or disease will not be able to operate as intended.
