Exercise Tips for the Working Parent
By Rachel Shouse
It's important for all adults to get adequate exercise. Busy schedules can make that really difficult. If you're trying to juggle work, kids, a home, possibly a marriage, you're busier than most would even be able to fathom. Although you may be the king or queen of multi-tasking, you may need some help getting some ideas on how to make time for yourself. You need to take good care of yourself in order to function at your best. With all that you have to get done, you really need to take proper care of yourself. Whether you like to workout at home, at a gym, or outside there are ways to not only make time, but simplify it as well.
Working Out at Home
It really doesn't take a room or thousands of dollars in equipment. Whilst the equipment is handy, it's simply not in everyone's budget. Some weights and bands may be nice to have. If money is an issue, think about searching online for used equipment. Shopping used can save you a lot of money.
Beyond the actual equipment, it may be hard for you to find the time, energy, and motivation to get a complete workout. In order to make time less of an issue it may be worth trying to workout when your kids are still sleeping. Another idea that a lot of moms do nowadays is working out with your kids. Kids love to do things like mommy and daddy so getting them interested shouldn't be too hard.
Fitting the Gym into Your Day
Although finding the time to go to the gym on a regular basis may be tricky, there are ways around some of the stress. It's worth asking your gym if they have a daycare center available. If they don't, try looking into other gyms if you have more available in your area. It may cost a little more, but if you can work it into your budget, it can take a lot of the stress away.
Get Outside With Your Kids
Getting outside during the warmer months is an excellent idea. Fresh air provides so many health benefits. It's also a great place to bring kids. You can bring chalk or bubbles with you in order to keep them occupied. You can do just about any indoor workout outside so it won't hinder your routine in that way.
If you like to run or go for long walks, it's not hard to put the little tykes in a stroller and bring them along. If your children are a bit older, ask them if they'd like to run with you, ride a bike, rollerblade, etc. It's good for kids to get exercise too.
Being a parent is one of the hardest and most rewarding jobs possible. It can be hard to do what you need to do for yourself though. You're always thinking of everyone else and worrying about doing what's best for them. They really do need you to also be well and healthy so taking care of yourself is one of the best things you can do for them.
