Be Kind to Yourself
By Paul Rothbart
It is amazing how some people treat themselves in ways they would never treat others, or allow others to treat them. I was one of those people. Extremely high expectations with unrealistic time frames, angry when we don't get there with that time frame. Sound familiar? Self-care is essential to good health, physically and especially mentally. Everyone has a basic right to health and happiness and no one should interfere in that, not even ourselves. Here are some ways to show yourself a little love.
Eat Well and Exercise
This one seems obvious but it is often forgotten. In caring for a loved one, you want to protect that person from disease and health issues. You should be a loved one to yourself. Eat sensibly, getting good nutrition. Exercise and maintain a healthy weight. This will help to enjoy a productive and longer life. Doing what it takes to stay healthy is a clear sign that you care for and accept yourself.
Pay Attention to Your Body
It communicates with you constantly. If you are hungry, eat something, if you are thirsty, have some water. Rest when tired. It seems so simple but people get caught up in work and chores and ignore their bodies all the time. Be alert to aches and pains and things that just don't feel right. This includes signs of anxiety and depression. Address these issues if and when they occur and get help if needed.
Get Away from Screens and Have Some Quality Me Time
Computers, tablets, and cell phones are very useful devices. You may even need them to earn a living. But take some time away from them periodically. Spent that time in an activity you enjoy. It may be cooking or baking, hiking, even just reading. Leave the internet and have some fun with yourself in the real world.
Forgive Yourself and Acknowledge Accomplishments
Not everyone succeeds. I don't care who you are, nobody wins all the time. But there are no failures, only learning experiences. If you never let yourself fail, you severely limit personal growth. When things don't work out, learn the lesson and move on. Be proud of the attempt. When you have success, take a little time to celebrate it. It's all too easy to just move on to the next goal. Giving yourself the occasional pat on the back is OK.
Kindness is one of the greatest gifts we can give others. It's also a gift we should give ourselves. Be kind to yourself. You'll live a better life.
