Feeling Anxious? Know What Lurks Behind It
By Sandy Schroeder
In today's world, it's easy to feel anxious and the pandemic has expanded the number of uncertainties, according to the experts.
MindBodyGreen.com cites Nicole Beurkens, PhD, CNS, who says, "Anxiety is really about the level of uncertainty in a situation and our sense of capability to handle it."
Most of us have experienced that combination of fear and needed competence, as we spent night after night awake and worrying. A child's illness, a looming financial deadline, or one's own health can easily generate anxiety.
It's hard to tell ourselves that everything will be OK, but we can review the experiences that we have had to show how we handled similar experiences, according to Dr. Beurkens.
Review Past Events
Knowing you have the right doctors for your child and yourself can reassure you when a new health issue comes up.
Thinking about previous financial pressures and how you solved them can reassure you that you can figure out this one too.
Reviewing previous choices that you have made when a new problem lands can give you more confidence in your choices now. You already know what to look for and how it turned out.
Consider how others that you know handled similar issues and how it turned out. Be aware it might not turn out the same way for you, but take a close look at what was done and how it played out.
Take a few minutes and leaf back through your memories. Sometimes we forget how many times we wound up on edge with our home, family, career and health. Make an actual list or talk with a trusted friend about all of the things that have happened. How you weathered them, and what advice, skills and people were most helpful might be good to consider now.
Remember to Breathe
Weaving in some breaks as you live with new situations will help you keep your balance. A dear friend often lectured me about the need to breathe when I was facing a new problem. Never just put your head down and try to plow on through. Keep on living and keep your head as you work on the problem at hand.
If your understanding of anxiety, and ability to feel confident are not easing your worries over things that you believe are out of control, you may want to call your doctor for a referral to a mental health specialist.
