Are You Always Tired?
By Sara Butler
If you feel tired a lot, you’re not alone. Fatigue is a common condition experienced by about one-third of otherwise healthy adults. While fatigue can also be a symptom of serious conditions or diseases, it can usually be attributed to lifestyle factors or choices. Here are easy ways to identify why you may always be tired and what you can do about it.
How Many Carbohydrates Do You Eat?
Eating too many refined carbohydrates can be a real energy killer, which is ironic considering carbohydrates help to provide energy to your cells. The problem lies with eating too many carbs, which can cause you to feel tired and fatigued throughout the day. When you eat highly refined carbs, they cause your blood sugar to rise rapidly. Your pancreas then produces insulin, which then causes a massive crash – and makes you reach for even more refined carbs.
To keep this from happening, replace refined carbs and sugar with whole foods such as legumes and vegetables that are also high in fiber.
You Are Sedentary
Some people claim they’re too tired to exercise, but the more you exercise the more energy you will have! If you’re otherwise healthy, then your lack of exercise may just be to blame for your fatigue, so it’s important to get up off the couch and get moving. Just 30 minutes of exercise a few times a week will work wonders on your energy level.
You Don’t Get Enough Sleep
How much good quality sleep do you get in a night? Not getting enough is one of the most obvious causes of fatigue, so if you’re not getting enough quality sleep at night, then your body isn’t able to restore and rejuvenate enough while sleeping. You should be getting at least seven hours of high-quality sleep at night. If you have are having trouble doing then, then consider establishing a better sleep routine and putting away electronic devices at least a couple of hours before bedtime.
You’re Not Eating Enough
Food is fuel for your body, and if you’re not getting enough fuel then your body will run on an empty tank, making you tired. Too few calories slow down your metabolism to help conserve energy, effectively zapping your energy in the process. Plus, if you don’t eat enough, you won’t be able to meet your requirements for vitamins and minerals each day, which can cause even more fatigue.
