Staying Healthy Even in the Sun

By Brandi Swieter

The sun provides warmth and can make a person feel energized and free. On the other hand, there are harmful effects due to the UV rays that come from it. This makes it necessary to take precautions in order to stay healthy even in the sun that’s supposed to be beneficial. Certain safety measures make it easier to be outside and enjoy the sun without worry.

Use Sunscreen Even on Cloudy Days

Roughly 30 minutes before heading outdoors, it’s important to apply sunscreen. You want to give it a chance to work and soak into the skin to truly get the effects of it. Even on cloudy days, the sun is present in the sky. It may be hidden away, but the harmful rays still make their way through. Use sunscreen every day to keep the effects from causing harm to your skin.

Get Some Shade

It’s necessary to find some shaded spots no matter what location you’re at. This is especially vital for those who intend on remaining at one spot for hours on end. Some shade will help protect from the sun’s rays as well as get a person out of the heat if there is any. Babies especially need to remain in the shade to keep them fully protected.

Wear Accessories

Certain accessories will make a big difference for sun protection. Wearing a hat and sunglasses are two of the best things a person can do to protect their scalp and eyes from the UV rays given off by the sun. Even having just one of these items goes a long way.

Keep the Body Covered

Especially when it’s hot, it may seem silly to wear long sleeves. However, with no sunscreen available and high UV levels indicated, it’s important to keep the body covered when heading outdoors. A long-sleeved shirt and pants would be best to keep the body protected. There are lightweight materials that won’t be so unbearable in the heat, and shade will help to keep things cool.

Enjoy the sun’s rays, but not at the expense of your skin. With the proper precautions in place, anyone can avoid the harmful effects the UV rays cause and simply enjoy being outdoors in the sunlight instead. Sunscreen and hats are the first lines of defense, but other options work just as well to keep any harm from happening.
