How to Stick to Those New Year's Resolutions

By Debra Rodzinak

We all want to make changes that will benefit our health and wellness, but often those vows we make to ourselves fall by the wayside by Valentine’s Day.  There are some tips the experts give that will help you keep those lofty goals that have been set.

Set a Specific Goal

Be as specific as possible.   Instead of saying, “I’m going to lose weight,” choose a specific goal that you can track such as running a 5K or loose one pound a week for 10 weeks.  A specific goal sets a perspective from negative to positive.

Adopt a Movement Modality Mindset

If you dread something, chances are you will not stick to it.  Instead of making exercise one more thing to check off your “to do” list, find out what type of movement gets you engaged and excited.  When your brain is geared toward expectation and excitement, you are more likely to stay with it for the long run.

Sleep More

This resolution will improve all areas of your life.  A restful night of sleep not only improves the overall health of those who slumber, but it also provides the body with positive results.  The removal to toxins, weight loss, and looking younger are just a few of the benefits of quality sleep.

Stay Mindful

Many resolutions focus on the outward appearance, but experts advise to look inward for a real change.  Make a vow to spend a minute every day thinking about the present.  Getting lost in the past can keep your thoughts negative and increase anxiety.  Instead, improve your mental health by changing them to the present.

Lose the Fad Diets

Fad diets not only fail, but they can be detrimental to your health.  Instead of trying to lose 50 pounds in two months, focus on creating a lifestyle change that brings about overall better health.  Moving more, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, and making moderate changes to your life are just a few ways to improve overall health.

No matter which resolution you choose to tackle, setting realistic goals and preparing for the change will ultimately result in a greater chance of success.  Begin with the big picture in mind and then break down the resolution into smaller, obtainable parts that make sense and set you up for success.  Doing this will provide you with an overall healthier and happier life.
