Get More Eco-Friendly for the New School Year

By Genevieve Smith

If you have kids, ‘tis the season to get ready to head back to school. Every year, kids look forward to a new them, a new image, new habits, a maturation in identity. How can you help define a healthier persona for your little ones? Create some eco-friendly routines for them to get excited about! Okay, perhaps these habits will be more for you than for them, but to cheer you on, just pretend your kids are really into them. Monkey see, monkey do, after all! Before you know it, they might start asking questions as to why you do what you do, and then you can turn the lesson plan on.

Sustainable Tips for Back-to-School

  • Pack lunches - If their school’s cafeteria isn’t top of the line, don’t limit your kids to the whims of the mess hall. Offer their favorite foods and the glory of diversity through a packed lunch. This provides the option to serve unprocessed foods and organic groceries, which are better for the environment and higher in vitamins and mineralsbecause of a healthier soil base. Go for reusable containers, a fun lunch box, and pack only what is needed in order to reduce waste.

  • Opt for a reusable water bottle - Any parent knows kids enjoy getting new things at the start of each year. This August, they can be treated to a reusable water bottle. Stainless steel options are great as you skip over potential toxins from plastic products. Plus, metal choices are more durable for a rough day on the school yard. Have fun with it and accumulate stickers to personalize bottles over time, giving your young crew something to look forward to and further define their likes and interests over time. Once they have a reusable bottle, they are more likely to stay hydrated and spend less of their allowance on drinks from the vending machine!

  • Skip the morning car ride - If possible, walk with your kids to school or ride bikes together through safe routes. This works, of course, if weather is cooperating; but on those nice, crisp mornings, look to ditch the car and get some morning air to get your kids’ brain juices flowing. If your schools are too far, consider putting them on the school bus or in a carpool to lower your carbon footprint.

  • Buy smarter school supplies - Do an inventory before you head out to the office store, avoiding double purchases. When it comes to buying necessary new things, however, look for products with minimal packaging and things made of sustainable materials whenever possible.

Heading back to school is an exciting -- and at times nerve-wracking -- time. For your kids, it’s an opportunity to further define who they are and discover new things about themselves. Help them stumble upon a love for nature and environmental stewardship as you slowly introduce them to eco-friendly habits they can carry forward.
