Health Benefits of Horseback Riding
By Brandi Swieter
Horseback riding is often used as a pastime for those who enjoy being around the creatures. They simply enjoy the tranquility that comes with riding through the woods and exploring the natural elements around them. Horseback riding actually has some health benefits that make it more worthwhile than people know. Even those who haven’t tried it yet can take some lessons and gain the benefits that riding a horse has to offer.
Improved Coordination and Stability
Riding a horse takes a lot of stability. The core has to be strong and supportive so riders can remain upright on the horse. The more a person rides, the better they become at remaining stable. They also develop a sense of coordination.
Strengthened Core
Because the body has to remain stable and coordinated, the core gets a good workout. All major muscle groups that work to support the trunk get strengthened by riding horses. This includes the abs, back, and even pelvic muscles. People who ride regularly will have a strong core as well as improved balance and posture.
Enhanced Muscle Tone in the Legs
While the core gets worked out the most, the legs get their own workout while riding. Riders essentially remain in a squat position as they straddle the horse, bouncing up and down with the animal’s movements. This will work the muscles in the thighs in particular, enhancing muscle tone and improving leg strength; as the legs work to grip the horse, they will also be strengthened. This helps with stability.
Reduced Stress
Riding reduces stress, in part due to the fact it’s exercise. Any form of exercise releases endorphins that can help to make people feel happier and more relaxed. In this state, people tend to forget about stress and feel much more at ease than they normally would. Being outdoors helps in this case as well. Aside from that, horseback riding gives people companionship. They get to ride, steer, and direct a beautiful animal like a horse and gain a bond that they may otherwise not feel. This in itself can be a great stress reliever.
Anyone looking to improve their health can start by riding horses. The activity provides much more than just a peaceful ride along trails. There are many health benefits that horseback riding brings. Search for local ranches that offer riding lessons and give it a try.
