Avoiding Back Pain While Doing Housework

By Brandi Swieter

Housework takes its toll on the body if people don’t take precautions. It isn’t recommended to simply start tackling chores any way a person sees fit. There are certain ways different tasks should be done to ensure they put the least amount of strain on the back and body and keep the work pain-free. Everyone should learn these preventive measures so they can clean their homes with ease going forward.

Choose a Broom and Mop That Accommodate Your Height

Both brooms and mops have a handle that allow users to maneuver them easily. These handles may be long or short, depending on which one was chosen. Each person should have a different size if they plan on handling these chores. It needs to accommodate their height so they are not bending too far over or leaning backward when doing these tasks. The right size height will have the body at the just the right angle to complete the job without adding stress to the body.

Take Breaks Often

Some people try to tackle all of their chores in one sitting. This is bad for the body and can lead to exhaustion quickly. It’s far better to take breaks often and space out the work so the muscles do not become overworked and fatigued. The body needs time between each task to rest and recuperate. It may even be wiser to spread out the work so it is done over several days so no pain sets in.

Keep a Water Bottle Nearby

The muscles recover quicker if the body is well hydrated. People doing the cleaning should be sure to keep a water bottle nearby so they can take a drink whenever they need one. This will allow the body to remain hydrated and able to handle the work without injury or pain.

Even with these preventative measures in place, people may still experience some discomfort if their muscles were not properly stretched or ready to take on the tasks. Some underlying problems could also be the reason. Visit The Joint Chiropractic to get an assessment and determine if an underlying cause is the culprit for the pain or if the cleaning was too much to handle. Someone else may have to tackle the housework for the time being if so.
