Eating Healthier in the New Year

By Randi Morse

Eating healthier is one of those things that we all know we should do. Changing your diet to accomplish those goals, however, is often much more difficult. Monetary restrictions, lack of knowledge, and busy schedules can make it hard to implement healthier meals. The good news is that with a few little changes and thinking ahead you'll find that it's easier than you may think to add healthier meals to your diet.

Learning to Cook

If you have never been taught how to cook the idea of creating healthy meals may seem intimidating. Today's technology makes it easier than ever before to learn how to cook. Not only are there thousands of videos on YouTube that demonstrate how to cook healthy meals, there are even cooking apps that you can download which allow you to follow along while you cook a meal. Don't be afraid to ask friends and family to teach you how to make a few meals. Most people who cook love sharing their recipes and cooking styles with other people.

Substituting One Meal

One of the easiest ways to change your diet is to start slowly by substituting one dish a week with a healthier meal. It's often easiest to do this for a meal in the middle of the week. Plan your meal a week before, so that you're able to ensure you have the groceries that you need for your dish. Think of it as an adventure! What new meals can you try to cook? Once you've gotten used to one healthy meal a week, substitute out another meal. Before long you`ll be eating healthy the entire week.

Eating Out

How many nights a week do you eat out? If you have a busy schedule, as so many of us do, you may find that it's more convenient to eat out during the week than it is to cook a meal at home. This not only costs a lot, it is also a much less healthy way to live. If you have a busy, active life, focus on learning meals that you can prepare ahead or bring with you. Crock pots are an excellent tool for busy families, and there are dozens of websites devoted to take-along meal preparation.

If you're trying to eat healthier during the new year, set realistic expectations for yourself. Don't assume that you'll be able to change your diet around completely in a short amount of time. It took a long time for you to develop the eating habits that you currently have, it will take awhile for you to incorporate new eating habits into your life.
