These Things Hold Back Your Happiness

By Sara Butler

No matter how different people appear from one another, most people have the same life goal: To be happy. There are many paths that can take you to happiness and usually just one simple roadblock – yourself. The key to stop getting in your own way when it comes to happiness isn’t that tough. Here are some things that may be holding you back.

Looking Back (Too Much)

Hindsight is always 20/20, but you can’t focus on the things in your rearview mirror too much. Sure, it’s important to learn from mistakes you’ve made, but constantly feeling disappointment and regret over past actions won’t help you to move forward and achieve happiness. Live in the now!

Your Expectations are Unrealistic

Look, almost everyone would like to live like Jay-Z and Beyoncé, but not everyone can. You have to set expectations for yourself that are manageable. Happiness can be achieved when you stop entering situations with preconceived notions of the outcome and embrace all the possibilities life has to offer.

You Put Too Much Stock in Others’ Opinions

If you’re constantly worrying about how others view you, then stop it! You have to let go of it in order to be happy with yourself. Focus on your own feelings and work to improve how you feel about the decisions you’ve made for yourself. You’re the one accomplishing your goals, so no one else’s opinion really matters but yours!

You’re Fixated on Youth

Everyone grows old and guess what? It’s a privilege to do so because not everyone gets the opportunity! It may be true that society is constantly bombarding you with images of a youthful ideal, but everyone still grows older. There’s no fountain of youth that can keep you young forever, so try to embrace your age and be happy with who you are! Aging is just a part of the natural process of life.

You’re Negative

It may seem obvious not to be a negative Nellie, but it’s something many people struggle with. Sometimes it’s just easier to be negative about stuff rather than look at the world with just a little optimism. You have to make a choice to see the silver linings of life and decide that your glass will always be half-full.

Being happy all the time isn’t realistic, but you sure can work on your overall happiness by letting go of some things that are holding you back and embracing the good things in life. So, look around yourself today and find something to be happy about!
