Unspoken Rules of the Gym

By Sara Butler

Every time you go to the gym, you’re bound to see someone trying to take a flattering selfie in the weight room mirror or skipping a good stretching session once the class has ended. There are a lot of behaviors at the gym that break the unspoken rules and drive trainers who work there bonkers. If you want to stay in the good graces of your trainer or fitness instructor, then you need to know these unspoken gym rules!

You Don’t Report Injuries

When you’re taking an exercise class to keep you accountable, then you need to let the instructor know before class if you’re injured. You shouldn’t wait for someone to ask you if you’re hurt, you need to be proactive about it. This way the interruptions during class to everyone else can be reduced and they can give you modifications for exercises you may not be able to perform.

Don’t Just Stand There

When you’re waiting for your class to start, don’t just stand there twiddling your thumbs. It’s not good for your body to go from sitting still to a high-intensity workout, so make sure you’re moving around in the minutes before class starts. Walk around the room, do some squats – whatever it takes to get your juices flowing and prepare your body for what’s about to happen.

Use a Spotter

You’ve seen that person trying to lift heavy weights without a spotter – don’t be that person! You’re risking injury if you attempt to lift without someone to spot for you. So don't put yourself at risk because you’re too shy to ask someone to help. The people who work at your gym are there to help, so always ask.

Put Your Phone Away

It seems as if people can’t be without their phones for more than a few minutes these days, but one place you always need to get rid of your phone is at the gym. It’s rude to the people around you as well as the instructor when you pull your phone out during class for a text or to check your Facebook feed. Plus, you won’t get the results you want from your workout if you’re not totally present – and there’s no way to be totally present and invested if your phone is in your hand.

Don't lose the good manners your mother spent so much time teaching you when you walk in the gym doors!
