Make Yoga a Family Practice!

By Sara Butler

When you’re searching for things to do in order to spend some quality family time together, have you considered yoga? Yoga is a great exercise for the body and the mind – plus it has some great benefits for kids! Here is what you need to know about why yoga is such a great choice for the whole family!

Enhances Flexibility

Perhaps one of the most important things you can do for your health as you grow older is to make sure you work to maintain flexibility. Yoga helps to promote physical strength and flexibility, helping kids to learn how to use their muscles in ways they may not be used to. Poses are done sitting, standing, and lying down and each one can challenge muscle groups to help a child become more aware of their body and the ways it can move.

Enhances Balance and Coordination

Balance is essential in the practice of yoga. Some of the balance poses were created to help promote physical as well as mental poise. Mental clarity is also needed to help with stability. For example, a child may have difficulty balancing on just one foot but the concentration required to try leads to improved mental balance as they remain calm and keep trying. Eventually, when children learn a pose and can sustain it, then they’ll be filled with a sense of accomplishment!

Enhances the Development of Concentration and Focus

Practicing yoga also encourages children to focus – which can be tough for a lot of kids! As they learn to channel their focus and concentrate on staying balanced to achieve a pose, you may notice how it helps children with concentration and focus in places other than the yoga mat, such as school.

Enhances Self-Esteem

There’s confidence to be gained for a child as they learn yoga. It can help to instill qualities such as patience, perseverance, and working toward goals. You can work on yoga together as a family but at the end of the day, it’s the child who must work to be successful in a particular pose. That gives them tools to be successful and builds self-esteem!

Finding an exercise that enhances your family's health and brings you closer together is always worth checking out. Give family yoga a try and see where it take all of you!

And, of course, chiropractic complements yoga.
