Are Frozen Meals Healthy or Not?

By Sara Butler

When you’re short on time, frozen meals seem to be something simple to reach for. But there is a lot of conflicting information out there about how healthy frozen meals are. So, what’s the deal? Are they full of junk or are they healthy? Here are some of the good and bad aspects of frozen foods to help see how they can be a part of your nutrition plan.

The Good Things

There are many good things that can be found in the frozen food aisles:

  • Easy – Pre-chopped frozen vegetables and fruits can make meal prep a lot easier and they’re just as good for you as the fresh versions as long as they don’t have any added sugar or salt. Some frozen meals can also be healthy if you keep on the lookout for meals with a lot of vegetables and lean protein.
  • Variety – You can find a large array of meals to choose from, from ethnic cuisine to comfort foods. Plus, a lot of frozen meal brands are trying to be a little healthier so you have more options that aren’t as bad for your health as they were a few years ago.
  • Portions – Probably one of the best things about frozen meals is that they aren’t huge, but are a normal portion you should be eating. Plus you don’t have to worry about portioning things out yourself, so it’s easy!

The Bad Things

There are a few things you need to be on the lookout for when it comes to frozen meals if you want to stay in the health zone. Pay attention to:

  • Sodium – Probably one of the worst things about frozen meals is their sodium level. You can find low-sodium options, too. Just keep your meals under 600 milligrams of sodium per serving and don’t eat more than 2,400 milligram per day.
  • Preservatives – Frozen meals have to stay fresh, which means they can contain a lot of preservatives to stay on the shelf and maintain their quality. Plus, preservatives help to keep microbes from growing in the food that can make you sick. Compare labels to see which brand has a number of preservatives you’re comfortable with.
  • Expensive – Per serving, frozen meals are quite expensive especially if you opt for organic meals.

Frozen meals aren’t something you always have to avoid, you simply need to be careful!
