Are You at the Mercy of Bad Work Habits?
By Sandy Schroeder
Questioning bad work habits can be tricky business, but WellAndGood.com seems to think we should all be doing just that. They believe we are not even aware of what is happening.
If you have work issues, you may assume every job has drawbacks, but perhaps you should take another look. Instead of pointing to outside influences when you want things to be different, WellAndGood tells us to look at ourselves and our work to see what needs changing.
They suggest five key work checkpoints: challenge, impact, joy, mindfulness and perseverance.
Are you excited about your work? - Great work happens when you really like what you are doing and are pleased with the results. Zeroing in on what interests you can make a difference in your performance.
Know what motivates you - Promotions, raises and applause are all good, but sometimes we have to dig deeper to find out what pleases us the most. Take a weekend off to figure out what is really driving your efforts. What pleases you the most at the end of the day? Where are you hoping to go? What do you need to do next?
Finding satisfaction in the process - Most of us recognize daily things in our job that please us. When we enjoy the actual work we are more likely to find success in the results. Hands-on efforts in presentations, art, writing, management, marketing, or production are really what it is all about.
Skipping the negatives to stay confident - Absorbing the constant flow of negative chatter can easily make you doubt yourself. When negatives surface, take a minute to review them and knock them off one-by-one. If you have been working for a while, you probably have plenty of positives that are much more real.
Grow from failure - Giving in or standing up to failure makes all of the difference. Failures happen all of the time, and so do successes. Learning from failure can help you move ahead with changes and new directions. Take a good look at what went wrong to fix it.
These checkpoints may seem to fit, or not. If they do, use them on a regular basis to see where you are headed on the job. If they don't fit, ask yourself what would help you find more satisfaction and success in your job. Sometimes talking with your boss, co-workers or a mentor, can be the way to discover where you are. Other times, you have to take a daily look at your track record and your goals to see what to do next. Stay aware and keep going. You will get there.
