The Hottest New Foods in the Health Market
By Genevieve Cunningham
Kale, quinoa, spinach. Have you heard enough about these superfoods yet? If you’re even mildly connected to healthy eating, there is no doubt that you’ve been inundated with the facts on these foods. Actually, it seems as though new superfoods are brought to our attention almost all of the time. Suddenly we’re supposed to stop eating those and starting eating these. It’s exhausting. But, if you’re open minded, it can also bring some yumminess to your diet. For those who love to be in the know, check out these three foods that are the hottest new health foods on the market.
Koji
This is a delicious new trend that many people are using to flavor their favorite dishes. Technically, koji is a mold. In the health and food world, it’s most often used in conjunction with rice, in which the mold is inoculated into the grain. It has a spicy kick to it, which makes it perfect for flavoring vinaigrettes and marinades. This is a great way to add flavor without extra sugar, sodium, or excessive amounts of oil.
Coconut Flour
You’ve probably heard all about coconut oil by this point. It’s good for the skin, digestion, the brain … you name it. Coconut flour is hot on the heels of its counterpart. This flour has a high percentage of fiber per serving, low calories, low fat, and is gluten-free. You can use it in almost anything that you would need regular flour for, but it’s especially delicious in sweets, and it makes them a bit healthier to boot.
Skyr
Say hello to your new Greek yogurt. This yogurt hails all the way from Iceland, is just beginning to gain steam, and it’s incredibly healthy. It packs a powerful protein punch (just like Greek yogurt), but it generally has fewer calories. It’s important to note that skyr is always made with skim milk, so you’ll get the same type of flavor, texture, and nutritional value, but with a slightly larger caloric deficit. You can use this unfamiliar yogurt in all the same ways that you currently use its Greek cousin.
Sure, it can be exhausting to keep up with all of the newest and hottest trends in the health world. But, it can also be exciting! Who doesn’t love a nice change in their diet? And it’s even better when that change is healthy and brings benefits to your body. Check out these three hot new items, and make your menu the hottest and healthiest around.
