How to Enjoy Chocolate Without Ruining Your Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

In February, with Valentine's Day at its midpoint, chocolate is pouring like a waterfall. Between the heart shaped goodies and delicious treats wrapped in red foil, you’re likely watering at the mouth. But this is also a time of year when you might see the scale creep upward, in large part because of the delectable treats landing on your doorstep. But does it have to? Take a look at these ways in which you can have your chocolate without ruining your health in the process.

Go for the Dark Kind

Experts agree that dark chocolate is a much healthier variety than any other kind. It’s full of antioxidants that protect the cells within your body. Unfortunately you can’t eat as much as you like, as it still contains sugar, caffeine, and calories. But the rich and tart flavor of dark chocolate usually helps curb your appetite while satisfying that sweet tooth.

Lessen the Amounts

Another great option is to simply limit the amount of chocolate that you eat. Most of us get into trouble because we can’t stop at just one! We eat the first one … and then one more … and then 10 after that. But if you want to enjoy chocolate in a healthy way, just eat one and then stop. To help you limit your intake, try suggesting to your significant other to buy a very small or limited box of chocolates, and then to help you manage how many you eat in a supportive way.

Ever Heard of Cacao?

Seriously, have you ever heard of this all natural chocolate? Cacao is a product that comes straight from the cocoa plant. In today’s world, a quick Google search will bring up multiple places to buy cacao bars for your pleasure. The texture is slightly different (perhaps a little dry?) and the flavor is not as sweet (think extreme dark chocolate), but those who make the switch usually love the treat once they get used to these minor differences.

Chocolate is so good. Who doesn’t love a nice chocolatey treat, especially at this time of year? If you’re keen on enjoying your favorite treat without packing on the pounds or reversing all of your hard work, just use these tips to eat it in a healthy way. With the right approach, you can literally have your cake … the chocolate kind … and eat it too.
