Cold Weather Solutions That Help Your Health
By Brandi Goodman
The cold and dreary months of winter can be difficult for a lot of people to handle. With snow in the forecast and freezing rain sometimes in the mix, your health can be affected by all the cold and precipitation. With some solutions in mind, you can handle the cold weather a little better.
Have an Emergency Kit in Your Car
You never know when slippery, icy roads can leave you stranded for hours. Having an emergency kit in your car can work wonders for keeping you warm and healthy. You should have a thermal blanket, an extra set of gloves, a hat, a flashlight and batteries, and some water and snacks to help get you through until help arrives.
Still Wear Your Sunglasses
Far too many people go the entire winter without ever wearing sunglasses. Because it isn't 75 and sunny all day, many believe they aren't needed. This couldn't be further from the truth. The sun is still visible on many winter days, and its harmful rays are being emitted all the same. Keep sunglasses on to protect your eyesight. Plus, cold air hitting your eyes can sting and cause harm as well. A pair of sunglasses can block this from happening.
Keep Your Feet, Hands, and Head Covered
Your body works overtime in the cold to keep your organs warm and working. This means your extremities are more likely to feel the brunt of the cold. Keep your feet, hands, and head covered any time you're outside in the snow or rain. With a thick pair of socks, proper boots, gloves, and a hat on, you'll be much better protected.
Eat Small, Spicy Meals
When your metabolism is working to burn the foods you fed it for energy, you tend to feel warmer than usual. Your internal body temperature is higher during this process. During the winter, it's wise to eat smaller meals throughout the day so your metabolism is working often. Enjoy some spicy foods to really help bring the heat. Chilis, soups, and other warm meals are also ideal.
The cold weather is not something to take lightly. It can have serious negative effects on your health and well-being if you aren't taking precautions. Do what you can to keep warm and safe throughout the cold season so you can maintain your health and sanity.
