Foods To Help Fight Stress
By Sara Butler
No one can live a stress-free life because stress is, quite simply, something every person on the planet has to deal with at one point or another. If you’re under too much stress and can’t find ways to relieve it, you are opening yourself up to a variety of health problems. Quite often, people under stress find comfort in food and that can lead to a vicious cycle of stress hormones and eating that won’t help you feel better in the long run. There are some foods you can eat to help combat this vicious cycle.
When you eat foods high in folate you are assisting your body in boosting your levels of dopamine, which is a calming chemical that helps your brain feel good. Good sources of folate include leafy green vegetables such as:
- Turnip greens
- Brussels sprouts
Chocolate is an excellent source of antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonols. Dark chocolates are full of these mood boosting substances that can also help to lower blood pressure and stress hormone levels. It also has a much stronger flavor than milk chocolate, so a little can go a long way.
Avocados for the Win!
Those creamy green devils can help to combat your body’s stress response. They contain something called glutathione – a substance which helps to block certain fats from being absorbed in the intestines that can create damaging oxidants. Plus, it has folate, so it’s a one-two punch to stress!
Allium Family Favorites
The allium family of foods consists of things such as onions, garlic, and leeks. They contain high amounts of something called allicin, an antioxidant that can assist in the neutralization of free radicals that can weaken your immune system and damage your cells.
You can also find allicin in scallions and shallots, so don’t be afraid to add a little to your favorite meal! They happen to be as tasty as they are stress fighting!
Berries are wonder fruits. Not only are they delicious, they’re also full of fiber to fill you up and low in calories, too! It doesn’t hurt that they are full of antioxidants that ultimately help to bolster your immune system and keep you from getting sick, which only brings on more stress.
These are common foods that also happen to be great at helping your body to deal with stress, so add a little more of these foods to your life so you can be less stressed and a lot more happy – and full!
