What Causes Back Pain?

By Sara Butler

Back pain is a complicated thing. It can be caused by many different things, which is why if you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from back pain, then you need your chiropractor to help you track your pain back to its source. Here are just a few of the things that may be causing your back pain, and how your chiropractor can help.

Your Diet

If you aren’t eating a proper diet, then it can be a literal pain. That’s because if you’re eating unhealthily and carrying around additional weight, it can have a big impact on your back. Weight gain from an unbalanced diet can put stress and strain on your back and lead to pain. Plus, if you’re not giving your body the nutrients it needs to be healthy, then you may be keeping it from being able to heal itself.

You Don’t Exercise

It can be hard to find the energy to exercise, but exercise is very important to your overall health and the health of your spine. When you move your body through different ranges of motion, stretch, and build muscle, then you support a strong body and back that can help keep the pain away. It’s also a great way to maintain a healthy weight, which is important to stay away from back pain.

You Don’t Practice Good Posture

Poor posture is a big contributing factor to back and neck pain for a lot of people. If you spend a lot of time sitting over the course of the day and you do not pay attention to the way in which you are sitting, then you may be setting yourself up for back and neck pain. Make sure you move around once an hour or more and remind yourself constantly not to slouch or sit in ways that don’t promote good posture.

Good posture must also be practiced when you are sleeping. This may sound funny, but it’s really important to sleep in a way that maintains the natural curves of your spine. Sleeping on your side or back is the best choice, with pillows used to help support your hips when needed. If you sleep on your stomach, you need to work to find a better way to sleep.

If you have questions about the ways in which you can help to avoid back pain in your future, you should discuss it with your chiropractor during your next visit to The Joint!
