How to Feel More Energized in the Mornings

By Stephen R. Farris

Do you ever wake up in the morning and feel like you have no energy to rise up and march with authority into the day? Chances are, when you feel like this -- probably more often than not -- the first thing that comes to mind is to reach over and hit the snooze button on your alarm clock or smartphone.

You might even opt to just cancel those additional snoozes and go back to sleep. However, this accomplishes nothing and you'll more than likely end up doing very little for the remainder of the morning or the entire day.

There are a few things you can do when you wake up feeling this way, especially if you have an above average hectic schedule that doesn't allow for very many late or sick days.

Drink Some Water

Studies show that if you drink a glass of water when you wake up, it actually helps to hydrate your body and could give you a quicker start to boosting your energy level. Another plus is that a glass of water will help wake up different parts of your body. It's the kick-start you probably didn't realize -- or knew -- was available the whole time!

Once you're up, a few stretching exercises can help wake up and loosen those muscles. In other words, help get the blood circulating.

Breathe In, Breathe Out

While you're doing those stretching exercises, also practice breathing in and breathing out. This will help get your oxygen levels up and percolating throughout your body.

If time allows, try to do some type of aerobic exercise after drinking your water and stretching. Hey, you're ready for it now, so walk/run a mile or two on the treadmill, get in some spins on the stationary bike and let that energy start to shine!

After these quick and simple techniques, be sure to make time for a healthy nutritious breakfast. Avoid the fast food drive-thru. Most of those quick-grab breakfast foods are high in sodium and carbs and could quickly take down that energy level you worked hard to get up; it can leave you with a sluggish feeling before the first break on the job.
