Be Emotionally Healthy

By Paul Rothbart

Being healthy is something we all want. It's vital to a long and happy life. We eat right and exercise for our physical health. Although somewhat abstract, most people are aware of mental health and some ways to maintain it. But there is a third kind of health for humans. Emotional. This one is far less commonly known but no less important than the other two. Emotional health differs from mental health in that it is focused on self-awareness, vulnerability, and being in touch with emotions. It doesn't involve never experiencing negative emotions, but rather is about successfully managing the highs and lows of daily life.

Ways That It Works

Emotional health starts with curiosity. Analyzing not only what we are feeling but why we are feeling it is the first step. Emotions may be triggered by certain events that remind us of past trauma. This brings about an awareness of negative emotions that allows us to deal with them in a healthy manner. Another important aspect is to not be self-judgmental. Treating ourselves in ways we would never treat others is not healthy. Acknowledging emotions, understanding their cause, and accepting them is healthy.

Importance of Emotional Health

Just as the mind is tied to the body, so too are the emotions. Good emotional health is a boost to both the physical and mental. Dealing with emotions in a healthy manner raises self-esteem and improves relationships. Empathy is strengthened and working in cooperation with others becomes more effective. Managing emotions well also reduces stress, which aids mental and physical health. Less stress boosts the immune system. It also provides greater levels of energy and fights fatigue. Striving for good emotional health is well worth the effort.

Ways to Improve Emotional Health

Emotional health is a day in day out process, requiring regular work. Seeing a therapist can be very helpful in maintaining good emotional health. Meditation, listening to music, and any form of relaxation also can be effective. Mindfulness, staying present, and focusing on the task at hand are others ways to improve emotional health. Sleeping well and exercising, taking care of the body, ties into caring for the emotions. Socializing, staying connected to family and friends, is a very important part of staying emotionally healthy.

People have three basic selves, the physical, the mental, and the emotional. They interact with and affect each other in both positive and negative ways. Maintaining good health for all three is important to a happy and productive life. Don't neglect emotional health. It could be the final piece of the puzzle.
