3 Coffee Sweeteners That Don't Include Straight Sugar

By Genevieve Cunningham

Sometimes that morning cup of coffee is the only thing that gets us up and moving in the morning. Our bodies and minds crave it. We know that just a sip or two and we’ll be awake and ready to tackle the day. And while coffee itself is said to have some healthy benefits, the additives that we put in it might not be the best additions for beginning a healthy day. If you would like to continue to enjoy your cup of joe, but with a slightly healthier spin, take a look at these three sweeteners that fit the bill.

Honey

OK, let’s go ahead and say it: Honey is definitely a sugary substance. It’s relatively high in calories and it’s packed full of sugary goodness. But most still agree that it’s a healthier option than white sugar. It’s natural, has allergen fighting properties for your body, and doesn’t have quite the same effects as traditional table sugar. Be prepared though; it’s not as effective of a sweetener as sugar, so be prepared for a little less sweet in your coffee and you’re good to go.

Spices

If you’re not ready to let go of sugar completely, try lowering the amount you put in your coffee, but adding additional spices for a kick. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and even cocoa can give your coffee a new twist while also allowing you to cut back on the total amount of sugar you use. Be creative and listen to your own taste buds. Everyone likes something a little different, so it might take a little adjusting and some time to find just the right concoction to satisfy your morning craving.

Stevia

This is one of the best alternative sugars on the market. It’s not as dangerous as some sweeteners (think aspartame), but it still brings that wonderfully sweet quality to your mouth. It contains zero calories, so you can enjoy it without any guilt at all. The only catch? Even though it’s said that you can directly replace sugar with Stevia, it won’t taste the same. Stevia is not sugar, so it has a slightly different flavor. But it’s fairly easy to get used to if you’re determined to make the switch. Just test out the ratios to see what works for you and be patient as your taste buds adjust.

You don’t have to give up your morning coffee, even if you want to be healthier. Just use some alternatives and make your coffee a healthy treat. This allows you to get your morning jolt, improve your health, and start your day off right every single day.
