Lower Back Pain on the Right Side
By Debra Rodzinak
There are several reasons that people suffer from lower back pain on just one side. Made up of a complex grouping of muscles, tissue, and bones that travel from the neck to the pelvis, back problems arise in many different parts of the back, including the lower right side.
Lumbar Disc Problems
When a disc is herniated, it is bulging or has slipped out of place. This particular type of disc herniation can cause the spongy discs that sit between the bony vertebra to seep spinal fluid from the encasement of the spinal column. Without this fluid, the spongy disc can crack or slip into the spinal canal. Most of these slipped discs occur in the lower spine at the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae.
In addition, most discs that have slipped or herniated do so toward one side or the other. This will cause pain in one side of the lower back only. Pain can also radiate down one leg. Depending on the particular type of injury or herniation, either side can be affected.
The Quadratus Lumborum Muscle
The quadratus lumborum (QL) muscle contains trigger points that can cause pain on the right side of the lower back. This particular muscle travels from the top back of the pelvis to the bottom rib and the associated lumbar vertebrae. The QL helps the body to bend to the side. There are several common locations or trigger points that can develop knots within the muscle. These knots are painful when pressed, squeezed, or even without any pressure or movement.
