Wash Your Hands Often: Here's Why
By Virginia Laird
It is back-to-school time which means your children are going to be exposed to a wide variety of germs on a daily basis. Now, more than ever, steadfast hand washing will be imperative in keeping your family healthy. Health and wellness experts suggest if you are washing your hands fewer than seven times each day, it may not be enough. Research suggests that many fall short on washing enough times each day to stay healthy. These experts offer a list of reasons why you should help your children (and family) make hand washing routine, including:
- It prevents the spread of germs
- Skipping the wash before handling food can make you sick
- There are times when sanitizer is necessary
It Prevents the Spread of Germs
Because your hands touch everything around you, they are constantly coming in contact with the germs of others. This is one reason why washing your hands routinely can help prevent the spread of these germs. Research suggests that the spread of viruses, including the flu, common cold, and stomach bug can be passed through contact with infected hands (or surfaces these hands may have touched).
Skipping the Wash Before Handling Food Can Make You Sick
Those who have a habit of eating without washing their hands are increasing their chances of contaminating food. This can lead to illnesses, the spread of food borne bacteria, and other health-related issues. It is best to wash your hands before and after handling food. It is also suggested that you wash before and after eating meals. Health and wellness experts suggest that if you do not already have this habit it is necessary to begin doing so right away.
There are Times When Sanitizer is Necessary
Although washing with soap and water is the best choice, there are times when sanitizer is necessary. Have you ever been to a public bathroom where the sink is so disgusting you feel like you will pick up more germs than if you walk out without washing? These are times in which sanitizer may be the best choice. Health and wellness experts advise that you should always carry a small bottle of sanitizer in your bag to avoid these times when touching the sink might be more dirty than using sanitizer. Another time when sanitizer may come in handy is when there is no soap or no sink nearby. Having sanitizer in your pocket or in your bag allows you to keep your hands clean and germ-free.
Start practicing good hand washing habits right away to make your home a healthier place.
