3 Winter Musts to Stay Healthy

By Virginia Laird

Winter is no friend of mine. Although, I enjoy the snow and colder weather for a quick minute, I am over it quickly. For many, winter weather is unwelcome because of the variety of illnesses that seem to take over throughout the season. Rather than falling victim to the host of viruses which seemingly thrive in the cooler weather, health and wellness experts have suggested a few things you can do to stay healthy this time of year, including:

  • Go to bed
  • Follow a balanced diet (most of the time)
  • Bundle up when you head outdoors in the cold

Go to Bed

Every night, millions across the nation fight the urge to hit the pillow, opting instead to check a few more things off their to-do list. Health and wellness experts admit that those who do not get enough sleep can be more susceptible to illness. Sleep experts have long advised that the average adult should strive to get at least six hours of sleep each night. For this to take place, experts suggest that you go to bed when you are tired. Still, some advise that having a set bedtime in place is best when trying to get plenty of sleep each night.

Follow a Balanced Diet (Most of the Time)

For many, following (and sticking to) a well-balanced diet can be difficult, especially throughout the winter months. Research indicates that during the winter months, many choose warm meals. Often these fall short on balance, which includes fruits and veggies. Another interruption to a well-balanced diet is the constant surroundings of holiday treats. Health and wellness experts suggest that consuming a well-balanced diet, most of the time, is best and can be achieved with careful planning.

Bundle Up When You Head Outdoors in the Cold

If you are anything like me, you may think you can run out to get the mail without your coat in the cold weather. However, health and wellness experts suggest that even light exposure to cold weather without proper clothing can lead to illness. These experts recommend that each time you head outdoors (no matter how long you will be exposed) you should cover your head, wear a coat, and consider gloves. Bundling up helps regulate your body heat, which can help keep you from struggling with a variety of health-related issues during the colder months.

With this advice you are now ready to take on the cold winter months without falling victim to illness. Stay warm!
