What's Affecting Your Mood Today?

By Donna Stark

Have you been feeling out of sorts lately and just can't seem to put your finger on why? Do you recognize that your attitude hasn't been the best and want to get away from that dark cloud that always seems to follow you? There are so many external factors that can contribute to a person's daily mood and happiness, but unfortunately, many people may not be as aware of them as they would like. It's important to understand where your feelings are coming from so that you can make the necessary changes to improve your days and maybe even your life.

What Can Affect Your Day?

When we think of things that can "put us in a bad mood," I am sure that we can all create a mile-long list, but who has time for that? Not us! So instead, let's just take a look at a few of the big ones.

  • Weather - Have you ever been affected by the lack of sunshine or the bitter cold? Or maybe the extreme heat in the summer bothers you more? Weather can definitely affect your mood for the day, but on top of that, it can also affect the way your body feels too, especially if you suffer from joint or sinus issues.
  • Hunger - If you ever had to wait longer for an hour to be seated at a restaurant, I'm sure you can understand the connection between hunger and your mood. Many people find themselves getting a little cranky, if not more, when their stomach is growling.
  • Environment - By using only two words, you will immediately get the connection between the environment and your mood. Are you ready? Beach. Traffic. Was I right? Of course your environment can affect your mood and it's so clear to see the difference when comparing relaxed and comfortable environments with stressed and uncomfortable ones.
  • Exercise - Does your mood change if you can't fit in your morning workout? Does the lack of exercise alter the trajectory of your entire day? Exercise has been proven to be a mood-booster so it's no wonder you may be experiencing negative feelings if you aren't able to workout.
  • Sleep - We all know what to do with a cranky baby, but does the same work for a grumpy adult? You bet! Getting the recommended amount of quality sleep is one way to control your moods, so make sleep a priority in your life. And if you have to, take a nap!

Balanced Moods for a Good Life

It's certainly unrealistic to think that you have to be in a good mood every second of every day, but you should aim for a life filled with healthy and balanced moods. And by being aware of what your triggers may be, that shouldn't be too hard to accomplish.
