Have You Heard About Gramping?
By Donna Stark
Do you remember visiting your grandparents during summer break when you were younger? Did you ever go camping with them or bring them along to go camping with you? Well, for many people, camping and grandparents don't really make a good mix, but if you are up with the latest trends, you have probably heard about a different way to vacation with the grandparents. It's called gramping, and for the most part, there aren't any tents, sleeping bags, or worries of bears involved!
What Is Gramping?
Essentially, gramping is when grandparents take their grandchildren on a special trip ... and no parents are allowed to come! It's a time for adventure, it's a time for fun, but more importantly, it's a time for improved health and better relationships. Take a look at some of the benefits that can come from gramping.
- Creates extra bonding time
- Encourages deeper relationships
- Builds confidence
- Reduces stress
- Improves communication skills
- Boosts happiness and satisfaction
- Lowers the risk of depression
- Promotes creativity
Ideas for Gramping Excursions
The best thing about gramping is that it can be designed for anyone. It's not a one size fits all kind of deal. So, whether the grandparents live down the street or across the country, there are plenty of options to choose from. Thinking about trying a gramping trip this year? Here are some ideas to get you started.
- Stay local - You've heard of staycations, haven't you? Well, if you are new to gramping and want to test it out while being close before traveling far distances, start local. Pick a kid-friendly resort nearby and take part in all of the fun activities your local towns have to offer. Just be ready for some dips in the pool and a milkshake or two!
- Rent an RV - Grab your maps! Gramping and glamping can go hand in hand if you hit the road in an RV. Look for cool sites that interest everyone and plan the trip of a lifetime! Just don't forget to bring the deck of cards and a bunch of board games for those long hours on the highway.
- Go overseas - This type of gramping trip may need a little extra planning, but imagine all of the wonderful experiences you could have! Want to see an authentic flamenco show? Travel to Spain! Want to ride a bike in cute, little villages with windmills as your backdrop? I hear the Netherlands is beautiful! The world is full of amazing sights to see, so get out there and explore!

It's time to hang out, experience adventures, and create memories with your loved ones. Are you up for it? If so, get everyone together, announce your plans to go gramping this year, and start packing!
