Developing Creativity Can Do More Than Add Culture

By Tom Herrin

While many people get into some pretty bad patterns of behavior in a survival mode, others seem to be without a care in the world.  All work and no play has a reputation for being bad.  On the other hand, those who play and never seem to worry about the responsibilities of providing for themselves and those in their charge, is not good either.  The moral of these cliches: Some balance in life is something people are better off to try to achieve.  Adding some creativity to life can do more than make someone live in a fantasy world.

Creativity Provides That All-Important Stress Relief

It can really always stand to be emphasized more: Stress is bad for anyone’s health.  A certain amount can always serve as a motivator, but too much is damaging. It can affect mental sharpness.  It can affect emotional well-being.  It can do serious harm to the cardiovascular system.  People don’t even have to do something great and wonderful, just relax and use some creative skills.  This can provide an opportunity for people to get their minds off of other things.  It has been compared to many meditative activities in effectiveness.

The Brain Can Get Some Needed Exercise

It has been proven that mental activity is important in protecting the brain.  It can help prevent Alzheimer’s as well as many other degenerative mental conditions.  Using both the mental ability required to be thinking more abstractly and the manual skills needed to carry out some of the activities can keep the brain alive and well.  At the same time, using creativity can help in maintaining the ability to organize thought that helps in sequencing.  All these are good.

Our Social Lives Can Get A Lift

Whether people admit it or not, many become removed from society at times.  Being busy can have its strengths, but isolating oneself from others can cause a kind of atrophy of social skills.  Creative activities can help to broaden the imagination.  It can also give an opportunity to share some of the creations with others who may have similar likes.  Appreciation of life in general can be broadened as perspective is increased.  More tolerance of others may be learned.  If something seems to be lacking in your life, step out there and try to do something creative, whether it is art, woodworking, knitting or any other of dozens of things.  It may change your outlook and improve your health in ways otherwise unimaginable.
