Get a Little More in Touch With Nature for Health

By Tom Herrin

It doesn't require spending lots of money or having a great amount of training in order to do something different to boost health.  For those who fall into that rut in which they feel they just are making no progress with improving health, there are plenty of easy options.  Sometimes getting a little more creative can provide some variety as well as some new perspective when it comes to ways to invest time.  While most people have done some camping as a child, maybe in the backyard, many have not done so for quite some time.  It can have some real value in improving health.

It May Help Relieve Stress

While it may seem like a no-brainer, camping can be a great way of helping to reduce stress.  There is something about being in the outdoors, and enjoying nature, that seems to have a positive effect on the body.  A study from the University of Minnesota found that even when people viewed natural settings, their stress levels were reduced and they experienced an increase in overall feeling of well-being.

It May Help Improve Memory

A lot of people have some kind of memory loss.  It is often due to the fact that their minds are so busy with so many things.  A University of Michigan study tested people who took different walking routes with very different views.  The results showed that those who took routes in which they viewed natural settings showed a 20 percent improvement in short-term memory.  Apparently that connection with nature can go far beyond some of those oversimplified things that are frequently assumed.

It May Help Bring Families Closer

When you are in a situation in which family members must depend upon one another, they may become closer.  When people are camping together, they will likely need to work together more closely to get things done.  That could be gathering firewood, setting up camp, or doing any of several other things that need to be done.  Our family has always enjoyed camping and would go anytime there was an opportunity.  Not only did it allow us a chance to get away, but it also gave us a chance to see new places while sharing the experience.  You may find that it can be something you always wanted to do but wouldn't take the time.  Try it and see how it can positively affect your health.
