Use Physical Activity to Train the Brain

By Tom Herrin

Most people likely don't think about doing something to train their brain.  After all, what can that mean?  For the most part, people do some sort of brain training without ever realizing it.  Anytime they learn a skill, they are repeating an activity that requires a process.  This activity can help to reinforce the actions needed to perform it.  As a result, the neurons become trained to be able to repeat the necessary actions.  While this is a very overt process, some others are much more subtle.  In some of these cases, the physical activities simply support development.

Rewiring the Brain May Be Useful

The human body is a natural wonder.  The brain is certainly no exception.  It is made up of an intricate network of electrical impulses that work together.  In reality, many of man's electronic inventions merely emulate the delicate piece of personal equipment.  When neurons are working at their best, brain activity functions at a higher level.  Anything that can help to maintain their condition and operation should be considered a plus.  It is worth investing effort in.

Exercise May Help the Memory

Memory is one of those things that many worry about.  Even when they may forget some insignificant thing, it can be a little unsettling.  To be on the safe side, it may be useful to maintain a program of exercise that may support memory.  It is believed that the hippocampus has a lot to do with memory, and exercise may increase its size slightly.  Exercises that are thought to be helpful with this are aerobics, walking, and bicycling.  All of these obviously work by providing a continuous oxygen supply while exercising.

Being Proactive Is a Great Way to Preserve Mental Health

Like many other people, I try not to ignore doing things to take better care of my mental wellness.  There are too many instances of those who suffer from some sort of dementia that may be avoidable.  I know that exercise, in general, can help to salvage health.  I also know that mental activities may protect mental health.  Putting these together with physical health in the right combination may be a key to doing the most I can for my overall health.  If I can find ways to retrain my brain, that is one more check on my list, and it is well worthwhile.
