Milk May Be More Important Than You Think
By Tom Herrin
As any of us look back to our childhood, we will likely remember those meals at school. The one thing that was always present was milk. It has been considered essential in promoting good health and growth for children. When I was in elementary school, we even had a milk break in the middle of the morning. As we grew older, many of us began to cut back on the amount of milk we drank and replace it with things that had little or no nutritional value. As a result, many of us may have developed some deficiencies that may have easily been avoided had we continued to include more milk in our diets.
Milk Can Still Deliver
Even as we age, there are some potentially great benefits from drinking more milk. It has a decent amount of calcium which is something people are commonly low on as they age. It also contains enough magnesium and potassium to provide these needed minerals to support healthy bones and teeth. For some individuals, it can serve to help them to feel more satisfied for longer after meals because it is generally high in protein. Many people who are involved in heavier physical activities drink milk immediately after working out.
Some May Need to Avoid Milk
With all of the benefits of drinking milk from cows, all is not well with everyone. Some have allergies to some of the contents of this milk. It could be due to the presence of the sugar, or lactose, or it could be due to one of the proteins contained. Some of these individuals can simply not tolerate drinking milk. For them, lactose-free milk is available. Some milk producers have even been able to produce milk from cows that does not have certain of these proteins. This allows for some good options for those who may need the protein or just enjoy drinking this kind of milk.
Are You Needing More Calcium?
As we age, many of us may find ourselves low in calcium. Drinking milk from cows does not offer as much calcium as we may believe, though it has some. For those who need more calcium, almond milk is a great choice. It can used in the place of other milk in many instances. Either way, milk can play an important role in our diets, so drink up.
