The 411 on Foot Health

By Brandi Goodman

Your feet carry you through life. Why, then, do so few people actually take the time to consider their foot health? Don't wait until your feet are aching in pain to take note. You should be managing the health of these lower extremities throughout your entire lifetime.

You Should Be Stretching Your Feet

Stretching is always recommended for your body before engaging in any physical activity. Not many people realize that getting up and walking anywhere is just as physical as the next activity you intend on doing. This means you should be stretching out your feet to get them flexible enough for the daily walking you undoubtedly do. Roll your ankles, bend and extend your toes, and even stand on your feet and raise yourself up and then back. Stretching can help you avoid pain.

You Should Be Wearing Athletic Shoes

Heels, flats, and sandals are all commonly worn -- yet, they lack the support your feet truly need. You should be wearing athletic shoes with shock absorption that can help take the brunt of the force every time your foot hits the ground. These should also be changed out often because worn shoes will not offer the support your body requires. Get a new pair every year at the very least. You may want to change them after six months if they're worn daily.

You Should Be Cleaning Your Feet Daily

Sometimes, it's not the shoes you're wearing or the lack of stretching that causes discomfort. Failing to keep your feet clean and dry can also cause problems. You should be cleaning your feet daily by washing them with soap and water. You can also use a pumice stone every week to shed dead skin and keep your feet smooth. Toenails also need to be trimmed so they do not dig into your skin or feel uncomfortable in your socks or shoes.

You Should Have a Doctor Check Them

Not all foot problems can be managed alone. If you notice pain that won't ease or unusual symptoms that seem strange, it's best to have a doctor check your feet out. Any discoloration to your toenails, bumps that suddenly arise, or calluses that won't go away may need the attention of a podiatrist.

Your foot health should always be a consideration. Too many people wear tight shoes, heels that keep their feet at an angle, and flats that offer no support. Many fail to stretch and don't do everything in their power to keep their feet clean, healthy, and feeling great. Keep these tips in mind so you can better your foot health and walk with ease.
