How to Prevent a Second Heart Attack

By Lana Bandoim

After the first heart attack, the risk of having a second one increases significantly. However, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk and prevent a second heart attack. Consider the following tips and take action to protect the heart.

Get Support

It is impossible to prevent a heart attack without adequate support. Whether this means finding a local support group of other heart attack survivors or searching for a new doctor specializing in cardiology, you have to be surrounded by the right help.

Stop Smoking

Smoking can increase the risk of a heart attack and complicate other health problems. If you quit smoking, the risk of a second heart attack goes down by 50 percent. Talk to a doctor about programs or products to reduce the dependence on nicotine.

Change the Diet

Diet changes are an important part of the heart attack prevention process. Focus on lowering bad cholesterol and eliminating trans fats. Eliminate fried, greasy food and junk food. Consider switching to a heart-healthy diet that includes fresh fruit and vegetables. The goal is to eat a balanced diet that has more nutrients, vitamins and minerals. In addition, limit sodium and alcohol intake.

Stay Active

Whether you join a new fitness class or finally start using a gym membership, it is important to stay active. Consider incorporating more exercise into daily routines. Staying active can help weight loss and lower blood pressure. It can also help the heart muscles stay strong.

Take the Right Medications

After one heart attack, doctors may recommend multiple medications to prevent a second one. The prescriptions may include drugs for controlling blood pressure and cholesterol. Other medications can include aspirin, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and statins. Talk to a doctor about possible drug interactions and any supplements you take.

Try Cardiac Rehab

Cardiac rehab is a program designed to help people prevent a second heart attack. Under medical supervision, you work with a team to improve heart health. Although the program can vary, the basic components include education, counseling, stress reduction, training and lifestyle changes.

The goal of cardiac rehab is to prepare you for a healthier life that reduces the risk of another heart attack. From reducing stress to becoming more active, cardiac rehab provides specific tools to improve health.

You can reduce the risk of a second heart attack. Heart disease survivors can take additional steps to improve their health and limit complications.
