Finish the Year Strong By Restarting Your Resolutions
By Brandi Swieter
By now, many people have forgotten all about the New Year's resolutions they made back in January. Most end up saying they'll try again next year only to fall into the same fate. People who are still eager to make a change still have a few months left to do so. Restarting the resolutions now will help people get back on track with their goals and allow them to make some headway before the new year arrives.
Set a Smaller Goal
Many people fail at maintaining their resolutions because they started one that was far too unattainable. Such a huge goal seems far off and impossible to reach. With just a couple of months left, people should make their goals smaller and attainable within that time frame. If people vowed to lose 100 pounds in the year, they should now change that to losing just 10 pounds by New Year's Day. This is easier to achieve and can make meeting the goal easier to manage.
Set a Countdown Timer
Lots of apps and websites exist that allow people to set a countdown timer. List whatever the goal is and set a timer to New Year's. With an ever-reminding app on your phone or a widget on the computer that's seen often, people are more likely to think about their goals and strive to achieve them.
Ask for Help
Reaching a goal alone may offer self satisfaction, but sometimes we want praise from others. Ask for help in reaching the resolutions that were set and have a friend or family member cheering you along. If your goal is to lose weight, for example, you can ask a health-conscious friend for some recipe ideas. Maybe get together for an evening of cooking a healthy meal. Even small victories add up.
Switch Your Goal
Instead of simply condensing a goal into something more easily attainable in the course of a few months, it may be better to switch the goal entirely. Saying you'll quit smoking, for example, may be too hard to reach. Instead say you'll get down to smoking just two packs a week by Christmas. Be sure to focus on the motivation behind this. Do you want to quit because you had a health scare? Are you trying to quit to be healthier for your kids? Having a motivation and a clearly set goal makes it easier to reach.
Resolutions set at New Year's and long forgotten don't have to be a complete loss for the year. There is still time to reach goals as long as people put in a last-ditch effort to make it happen. Goals of fitness and weight loss may seem especially difficult throughout the holidays, but making just one small change here and there can be all it takes to make it happen. It's worth a shot for better health.
