Sled in to Better Health

By Brandi Goodman

Sledding is often done by kids and their parents looking to burn off steam during the cold winter months. With sled options both big and small, a person of any age or size can take up sledding. It's much more than just fun. Sledding can also lead to better health if it's done often enough.

Burn Calories

A big benefit to sledding is all the calories burned. The time spent climbing back up the sledding hill to be able to go down once again is a major part of that. The trek back to the top will burn more calories than the act of sledding itself, though even that will help you burn some off as well. The bigger the hill, the bigger the climb, and the more calories burned.

Strengthen the Heart

Activities done in cold weather make the heart work even harder. As your sled races to the bottom of the hill and gives you an exhilarating feeling, your heart will be pumping fast. This gets the blood flowing through your body. As you spend time walking back up again, your heart will be working even more as your muscles are all moving to complete the task. A strengthened heart will be achieved after time spent sledding.

Work the Lower Body

The lower body especially gets a workout during sledding. The climb back to the top requires you to use your leg muscles. The more time you spend walking from the bottom of the hill to the top, the more you work out your lower body and ensure your leg strength increases. It should be easier and easier to get to the top of that hill each time you venture out again for another day of sledding fun.

Engage the Core

The core stays engaged during time in a sled. You need to sit up straight and use your core to help yourself steer the sled slightly so it doesn't hit anything or anyone on the way down. This helps to strengthen the midsection, which can improve posture and promote wellness all around.

Boost Mood

Time spent outside can boost your mood. Time spent exercising can as well. Pairing the two is an even better way to ensure those feel-good hormones get produced. You're more likely to feel happy and excited sledding outside than if you were home inside with nothing to occupy your time.

Before starting any activity, it's best to see your chiropractor. Visit the Joint Chiropractic to ensure joint restrictions are removed and you can sled without fear of injury. You want to be as flexible as possible so you can make your way up and down the hill with ease.
