Get a New Bike During Bike Month
By Brandi Goodman
With Bike Month here in May, it's a great excuse to choose a new bike to ride. Continuing to use an older bike with bent handlebars, a small seat, and other issues can put a lot of strain on your body. Biking is a great activity that promotes fitness and health as long as you have the right bike for your height, weight, and performance level.
Ask About Weight Limits
Some bikes have low weight limits and can only hold up to 150 pounds. Bigger bikes in the 24- to 26-inch range tend to hold up to 250 pounds. Always ask about the weight limits when choosing your bike so you can be sure it will hold you well. If you're close to the limit, you might want to consider another size so that you feel comfortable and confident that the bike will support you.
Test Out Seats
The seats on a bicycle are typically rather small and narrow. They can feel very uncomfortable while you're riding. You should test out a few different seat options and see which one feels best to you. You might need a wider seat or more cushion so you're comfortable and feel safe to ride. You may not even need a new bike at all, but simply a new seat.
Consider the Terrain
You may want a bike simply to ride along paved roadways and sidewalks in your town. Perhaps you're looking for a more rugged bike that can handle off-road terrain. Considering the terrain you'll be riding on most often is highly important when choosing a bike. Some are not able to handle rough roads as well as others. You'll be sore bumping along gravel roads on a bike that isn't intended for such riding. A mountain bike would be better suited for this activity.
Shop in Person
It can be tempting to purchase a cheaper bike online. However, this won't allow you to test out the bike and see how it feels in person. Shop in person so you can be sure you're choosing the most comfortable bike for your body and intended use. You'll also be able to ask the associate questions and get help when needed.
If your current bike has left you in pain after riding, it's time to see a chiropractor. Visit The Joint Chiropractic to have any joint restrictions or subluxations removed so your body feels more flexible and able to handle the ride next time. Your chiropractor can recommend some stretches to do before you head out on your bike so you can avoid pain and ride without discomfort.
