How to Deal with Neck Pain

By Sara Butler

Life sure can be a pain in the neck. Yes, sometimes waking up with a sore and stiff neck with reduced range of motion just happens. So, what should you do if this strikes you? Here are some immediate steps you can take if you have neck pain, either acute or chronic.

The Impact of Neck Pain

When neck pain strikes you, you will need to take immediate action in order to promote recovery. Everyday actions such as sitting at your desk or traumatic events such as a car accident can cause:

  • Muscle tenderness in the neck
  • Stiffness
  • Tension headaches
  • Migraines
  • Reduced range of motion in the neck
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms and hands

These symptoms can hinder your ability to navigate your day effectively.

Immediate Action

It’s important to promote healing by taking immediate action in order to address your symptoms and keep damage from getting worse. You should:

  • Rest – Your life may be busy, but you will need to rest your neck in order to speed up the healing process and reduce soreness.
  • Apply ice or heat – Ice should be applied in the immediate aftermath of an injury or muscle spasm. For more chronic symptoms, heat is required to soothe. Ice will reduce swelling and inflammation and should be used the first two days. After that, apply heat for stiffness.
  • Massage and stretch – if you’re looking for a reason to go get a massage, there’s no better reason than a sore neck! First, you should stretch to help ease discomfort, making sure to go slow so you don’t cause yourself more pain.
  • See your chiropractor – The best solution for neck problems is to see your chiropractor as soon as possible. They can help to address the underlying issue behind your neck pain and fix any joint dysfunctions or restrictions that may be the culprit.

Your chiropractor at The Joint is something of a neck pain aficionado, so no matter your level of neck pain, don't delay in getting in to see them. Remember, you don’t need an appointment at The Joint, so at the very first twinge of pain or stiffness, you need to get your sore neck in front of your chiropractor! The longer you wait, the more difficult and longer your recovery may take, so don’t delay when your experience neck pain!
