High Heels: 3 Reasons to Take Caution

By Virginia Laird

As a high heel lover, I know full well the challenges wearing them can bring. Even with this knowledge (and experience), I am not quite ready to give up on the fashion pieces. After all, beauty and fashion can be painful but completely worth it. When considering a beautiful heel or a more comfy shoe with your next cute outfit, there are a few things to consider.

Heels Can Cause Changes in Posture

Although your posture may not be the first thing you consider when choosing shoes, it should be something to think about. Wearing high heels can cause the body to alter the way the spine holds you up. Anytime the body changes its posture (even the slightest bit) it can cause pain. When posture changes, not only does it affect the spine, it also alters the strain on the back muscles. Theses changes can make it more difficult to maintain proper posture.

Frequent Wearing of Heels Can Alter the Spinal Structure

The spine moves every day with no assistance. When you add the wearing of high heels to the equation, the spinal structure can be almost altered in an irreparable manner. The structural changes can cause restriction of function. The spine plays a huge role in the carrying out of the body’s functions. Functions that are interrupted or altered can be restored at the hand of a chiropractor.

Heels Can Cause Knee Pain

Another part of the body that can be affected in the practice of wearing high heels includes the knees. When embracing the heel, your knees can feel as if the body is actually three times its actual weight. This can also cause added stress to the already stressed joint. Due to the great use of the knees, it is important to take great care of them. Pain in the knees can be difficult to overcome. It can also stop you in your tracks. When knee pain reaches its max, you may find your daily activities are interrupted.

Don't worry about the need to completely give up the lovely heels in your wardrobe just yet. Instead, wear them with caution. For example, don't wear them for the commute, just the event. Or keep some flats with you at work.

Add chiropractic visits to your routine. Your chiropractor can help restore the function in your spine. Pain relief is another perk of keeping a chiropractor in your health arsenal. Your chiropractor at the local The Joint Chiropractic can also help to restore any changes in posture. With more than 370 locations nationwide you are certain to find one near you.
