Don't Be Intimidated by the Gym!

By Sara Butler

Many people join a new gym, then finds themselves at a loss when thinking about how to get started. A new workout space for someone who's new to exercise can be an intimidating thing, but it doesn’t have to be! First, be proud of yourself for this big step you’ve taken for your health and wellness. Then follow these simple steps to help you learn not to be “gym-timidated.”

Take Advantage of the Tour

Most gyms offer some type of tour or new member orientation. It’s tempting to skip this, but you really shouldn’t. It can be a great way to gain some valuable information. It can help you to get some insight into how to use the equipment, the basics of the way the gym works, and where you can find all the things you need in order to get familiar with your surroundings.

Understanding the Cardio Section

Nothing strikes fear in the heart of a new gym member quite like using new equipment, especially in the cardio section. Don’t worry! Most of the time you should be able to find directions for use right on the machines. These instructions can help you to get started.

Strength Training

The weights and strength training machines can be intimidating to a new user, but most gyms have them organized in an intuitive way. You may find the machines divided up by the muscle group they target. When using them, it’s probably a good idea to only use one machine per muscle groups -- but if you’re unsure, talk to a gym employee to give you the lowdown on a basic workout.

Group Fitness

One of the best things about gyms are the group classes they offer! Check out the classes your gym offers and see if any pique your interest. Many gyms will allow you to try a class for free to see if it’s up your alley. You can often find classes such as:

  • Step aerobics
  • Group strength training
  • Dance-like classes
  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Cycling
  • Kickboxing

Some specialty classes might be offered too, so don’t pass them up!

If You’re Shy

Being shy is only a big deal if it’s going to stop you from getting the workout you need. To break out of your shell you should try:

  • Taking a class to make friends
  • Talk someone into working out with you
  • Get to the gym early
  • Get to know a gym employee or instructor
  • Remind yourself you can leave anytime

Don’t be afraid of the gym! Once you start to go, you’ll find your comfort zone.
