Red Flags for Osteoarthritis
By Sara Butler
Osteoarthritis is a condition many people live with each day. It develops slowly over time as the joints in your body, such as your knees, hips, and ankles, go through normal wear and tear. That’s why it's important to know the first warning signs of osteoarthritis -- so you can work with your chiropractor to help control your symptoms and keep your joints healthy.
Pain in the Joints
One of the first symptoms you may notice is pain in one or more of your joints. Any evidence found of osteoarthritis on an X-ray may not fit the level of pain you’re feeling. The pain often associated with this condition is made worse by activity but gets better with rest. So, be on the lookout for pain in your joints during an activity -- it may be one of the first indications!
Stiffness in the Joints
Stiffness in your joints as it related to osteoarthritis can happen after you sit for a long period or when you first get out of bed in the morning. This stiffness can last up to a half hour and make your daily routine more challenging.
Swelling of the Joints
In normal joints, a small amount of fluid is normal. But when a joint is impacted by arthritis, abnormal amounts of fluid may build up, causing swelling. This buildup of fluid is created by the soft tissues that line and surround the joints. If you notice swelling in one or more joints, then it might be due to osteoarthritis -- don’t ignore it!
Crepitus
Crepitus may sound like an ancient Greek philosopher, but it’s actually the sound your joints can make once the cartilage wears down. It is often heard as a rattling or cracking sound. You may also experience feelings of crunching or even hear your bones rubbing together.
If you experience any or all of these warning signs, talk to your chiropractor or other trusted medical professional. They can perform an examination and confirm whether or not you have osteoarthritis. Then, a treatment plan can be put into motion to help you learn to deal with the effects this condition may have on your life. Don’t ignore warning signs because the faster you treat them, the better your outcome will be! The good news is you never need an appointment at The Joint Chiropractic, so come in today and have your concerns about arthritis looked into!
