Support Healthy Immunity --With Food!
By Sara Butler
Winter brings with it more than frosty breezes and icy ground, it also brings with it illness. Viruses run rampant in the winter simply because they can, so you must do what you need to in order to protect you and your family. You can fight back against the cold and flu by supporting a healthy immune system -- with food! Here are some foods you should add to your diet to help give your immune system a healthy boost.
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Extra-virgin coconut oil is full of something called lauric acid. Your body converts this acid into something called monolaurin, which helps to fight back against some viruses and bacteria. You can easily add a little more coconut oil to your diet by adding it to your morning smoothie or cooking with it. Think of it as a way to add a little tropical flair to a gray winter day.
Garlic
Garlic doesn't just keep vampires away, it also helps to keep bugs away too! Garlic has anti-fungal, antibiotic, and antiviral properties. It's actually been used in medicine for centuries due to all it has to offer. So, don't worry about your breath and add some garlic to whatever it is your cooking!
Honey
Back in the days when Rome was a military force to be reckoned with, soldiers often slathered honey on their battle wounds to help prevent infection. Scientists have found evidence that honey was used much the same way all the way back to the Stone Age, too. Now science has discovered that honey can help your body to fight against many different types of bacteria and that it's loaded with antioxidants to help support your health. Don't be shy to add a drop of this sweet stuff to your herbal tea!
Eggs
Eggs are possibly the perfect food. They're full of protein and other important nutrients such as Vitamin A and iron that help to keep you healthy. The selenium and zinc you find in eggs are minerals your immune system needs to function optimally. You could say that when it comes to the health of your immune system, eggs are eggs-cellent!
Carrots
Carrots are famous around the world for the beta-carotene that gives them their orange hue, but they also are great for your immune system because they're packed with Vitamin A! Vitamin A helps to keep the tissues that line your mouth, respiratory system, and digestive system healthy, which can help you from getting sick.
You are what you eat. In this case, be healthy so you can have a strong immune system!
