Plan Well and Exercise in Comfort in the Cold
By Tom Herrin
The success of what any of us do is often closely tied to effective planning. This is usually based on information and resources. Those of us who enjoy exercising outdoors know that when the temperatures begin to get colder, it can be more than a simple challenge. Exercising creates heat, but knowing just how to balance that heating with the need to cool off can be a problem. If you struggle too long at the beginning to warm up, you may lose too much body heat. If you warm too fast and become overheated, you may be unable to complete the workout. With the advancements made in fabrics today, it is possible to dress in layers that can be managed to provide for a good workout in almost any temperature.
Make the Base Layer Count
In my younger days, about all I had to wear in the cold were sweats. They were fine for some things, but the real problem was that they were pretty heavy once I began to perspire. They would hold that moisture, and I would end up being wet and cold. It is suggested that you wear a base layer that is tight-fitting and lightweight. It should wick away moisture and allow good airflow. This can help in keeping the skin dry.
A Layer of Insulation Helps
Insulation serves a few purposes. It helps to hold heat and cold. For physical activity it also helps to buffer against heating up or cooling down too fast. This middle layer needs to be able to keep you warm enough without overheating. It should provide a level of comfort. There are many traditional materials still in use for this as well as some newer things that may be a little more streamlined.
Protect the Inside
The outer layer needs to be tough enough to protect whatever is on the inside, and that is you. It should resist rain and wind. It also should provide some protection from things that could be abrasive such as sand and other objects. If it can be removed easily without interrupting the workout, it is more useful in allowing you to manage your personal climate better. Most of these are readily available and inexpensive. With this, layers may be the answer to what was once a big problem in achieving comfort when working out in the cold.
