Tips and Tricks for a Healthy Halloween
By Sara Butler
It can be hard to pull the health wool over your kid’s eyes on such a sugar-laden holiday as Halloween, but parents are nothing if not crafty! Bags of Halloween candy sitting around your house isn’t a scenario that’s healthy for anyone. The trick is to find other treats for your kids that are a bit healthier and then convince them that you’re right! Here are a few healthy alternatives to Halloween candy you might want to keep around and give out on the big day that won’t get your house toilet papered!
Individually Wrapped Snacks
There are some really great options out there that kids will enjoy without all that sugar. You can find and hand out individually wrapped cheese crackers or fruit snacks. You can even buy Halloween-themed packs of pretzels, as well as granola bars, raisins, pumpkin seeds (fitting!), cheese sticks and much more! The only thing you really have to make sure of is that you find something individually wrapped for safety.
Just Say No to Candy!
Who says you have to have candy around? You can also hit your local dollar store and find a bevy of Halloween themed products to have around and hand out to trick-or-treaters. Get some fun straws or other fun Halloween handouts.
Temporary Tattoos and Stickers
If there’s one thing kids like as much as they like candy it’s temporary tattoos! You can easily find some scary temporary tattoos to hand out, and it’s much healthier than loading them up with sugar.
Another thing kids go crazy for is stickers. You can easily stock up on some stickers and hand them out at your door instead of sugary snacks.
Those little toys at the party store make great things to give out for Halloween or use them to occupy and distract your own kids from the fact that you’re not buying them a ton of candy. Spider rings or glow sticks are always fun.
Feeding Your Kids
There are several fun ways to Halloween-ize snack time for your kids! Try Halloween deviled eggs or pumpkin butter toast for the haunted holiday. If you make it fun, then they may not even notice that there’s no sugar involved!
There may be no way to keep all sugar out of your kids' clutches this Halloween, but you can at least offset what they do get by providing better options at home. And who knows? Providing different treats for the kids coming to your door may make you one of the most popular stops – all without giving out sugar bombs!
